Corrections Advisors will provide a broad range of advice and technical assistance on corrections assistance issues. Work typically involves assessing, monitoring and advising local corrections officers as they perform their duties and ensure that the rules and regulations governing a correctional facility are enforced.


CORRECTIONS ADVISORS SKILL SETS NEEDED

Prison operations, probation and parole operations, corrections administration and human resources, corrections training, security threat groups, correctional facilities management, classification and records, prisoner programs, prisoner transportation, emergency response, strategic planning, corrections logistics, correctional medical services and community corrections.


Responsibilities

As a Corrections Advisor I and expert in your field, you will be involved in performing a full range of responsibilities to include selection, screening, and training of local corrections officer candidates. Such work seeks to develop the local civil police and corrections system, or to create a new system where none exists. As a Corrections Advisor I, you may also be required to assess existing incarceration structures and facilities and make recommendations to senior government, prison/corrections/probation/parole and criminal justice officials to develop and/or strengthen structures, facilities and programs, with due regard for human rights. You may also be required to provide assessments and recommendations in countries where violations of human rights may be common. Corrections Advisors I may also be called upon to work with other international and local officials and international organizations in developing assessments and recommendations.


Requirements

In addition to the minimum requirements, Level I Corrections Advisors must:

  • Have graduated from federal or state-certified corrections, probation/parole academy of at least 120 hours in length.
  • Possess current certifications in first aid, less than lethal systems and chemical agents.
  • Possess excellent analytical communication skills.
  • Have the ability and desire to work overseas.
